Regulate your gut health, reduce bloating and discomfort, and optimize your digestion for ease and smooth functioning.

What is SIBO?

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, commonly known as SIBO, is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by the excessive growth of bacteria in the small intestine. Normally, the small intestine contains relatively low levels of bacteria compared to the large intestine, so when there is an overgrowth, this can lead to a range of troublesome digestive symptoms that can impact quality of life.

Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent bloating, often shortly after meals

  • Multiple food sensitivities, often feeling bloated regardless of what you eat

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Urgency with bowel movements

  • Excessive gas

  • Nutritional deficiencies due to malabsorption of nutrients

  • Heartburn / acid reflux

  • Abdominal cramping or discomfort

Possible Causes

While the causes of SIBO are still not fully understood, here are some possible contributions:

  • Impaired motility: When there is an interruption of the normal movement of the small intestine, this can allow bacteria to backlog or overgrow.

  • Structural differences: Strictures or adhesions which can develop after surgery or chronic inflammation, can slow down the movement of food through the gut and promote bacterial overgrowth.

  • Medications: Certain medications that impair gut function either by reducing stomach acid or slowing down the motility have been thought to correlate with the increased risk of SIBO. These include Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) commonly used for Acid Reflux, antibiotics, and opioids for pain management.

  • Risk factors: conditions like hypothyroidism or short bowel syndrome can increase the risk of SIBO

How We Can Help

Naturopathic medicine offers a holistic approach to managing SIBO, aiming to address the underlying causes of the condition and alleviate its symptoms. Here are some naturopathic strategies commonly used in the treatment of SIBO:

  1. Comprehensive Assessments: Testing is the first step. First, we want to identify the severity and type of the SIBO, most commonly being methane or hydrogen positive, as this will direct treatment and set a baseline to monitor for progress. We also want to rule out any other possible causes of your digestive concerns which we can do through thorough history intakes and other comprehensive testing if needed.

  2. Lifestyle & Nutrition: While treating your symptoms, we may suggest temporary eliminations of certain aggravating foods or introduction of others, using food as medicine. This is not a stand alone option and is often combined with other therapies like herbal and supplemental support.

  3. Herbs & Supplements: By using a customized protocol for your specific presentation, we can use a combination of potent herbs and supplements to help tackle the overgrowth, regulate gut motility, and work towards restoring the digestive tract’s natural function.

  4. Antibiotics (if necessary): If necessary, we may consider referring you to your family doctor for antibiotic support depending on the severity and stubbornness of the SIBO symptoms.
